Re the Fabia VRs review;

I'm the sort of person they're looking for; recently married, mid 20s, make decent money, want a decently nippy car, the wife wants an automatic gearbox and we don't want to spend too much. Want to get something brand new as currently have a 9 year old econobox. The insurance in the Fabia is very cheap, so all in all it looks a great deal. Chuck in the 'VAT off' offer, and you can get one for less than 14k. For a 180bhp car that is a remarkably good price!

That's known that cash makes people independent. But what to do when someone has no money? The one way only is to try to get the home loans or short term loan.

Hyundai i20 is sharp and stylish on the outside with a deceptively spacious interior and eye catching exterior.

Interesting to read about your campaign against Vodafone. I was particularly interested to see you used a national BBC radio platform to launch your assault.

Could this by chance be the same BBC which is "corrupt" and "arrogant" and in danger of "destroying our democracy"? ('Break-up Bullying BBC Before It Destroys Our Democracy' - September 2006)

My advice would be to make your articles a little less angry and vociferous. Then you wouldn't sound quite so much like a bitter old man.

I think you are quite right about global warming. It is obviously very difficult to measure global temperature with any accuracy as it is such a complex variable. However, it is clear that many of the supposedly inevitable consequences are not happening. Sea level is rising very slowly, more slowly than it did in the past and not a threat to anyone and the Arctic ice is not disappearing - see http://www.ijis.iarc.uaf.edu/en/home/seaice_extent.htm. One can only assume that either the temperature is NOT rising as indeed the uncorrected data shows, or the link between temperature and sea-level, ice extent etc is wrongly modelled, or both. We are spending a fortune to good purpose. Very worrying.

Just wanted to say what a pleasant surprise it was to see someone writing positively about Ayn Rand these days. We the Living was prophetic and something of an overture to her magnum opus Atlas Shrugged. You are exactly right about her insights about the government making decisions for us are exactly on point with regard to the Obama administration's line. And, she subsequently demonstrates how devastating those decisions are on the lives of the individual.

I have been one of her followers since the late 60's and took the Objectivist courses that were offered explaining her philosophy. I named my first daughter Kira after the heroine of We the Living.

Nice work.

GM's upsurge is sure with the 2011 Chevrolet Cruze out in the global markets. This car truely looks and feels world-class. It's interiors are really huge in its class. And looks like Toyota and Honda and other contemporaries ofht e same class will be in for a surprise!

I just had to comment on your observations about the new Skoda Fabia VRs & the type of people who drive them. Well, my wife's getting one next week, she's 37, mother of 2 & strangely enough never spins her wheels when she sets off from the lights! She's trading in her previous car, a Golf GTI (Mk5) because it's a little thirsty & the Skoda offers a similar level of performance whilst delivering a 25% improvement in fuel consumption.
Why then has my wife decided to go for (in your opinion) such a socialy irresponsible vehicle? The answer, quite simply is that she appreciates a car that is agile, stable, brakes & accelerates well, so that she can negociate the plethora of poorly driven massive 4x4's that sadly will be found 2 inches behind a pensioner (who may have just died) driving (I use the term loosely!) a Honda (Civic/Jazz)/Toyota Yaris at 25mph in a 50mph zone down the Queens highway.
In a safe & proper manner, she will safely overtake the 'roadtrain' and smile the smile of someone who knows that, 'power is nothing without control', but a lack of power is just the road to misery! :-)

Multi-purpose vehicles are often purchased through necessity rather than choice. After all, for many the need for practicality takes precedence over driver satisfaction. The S-Max is the machine that appeals to head and heart. This talented MPV handles like a conventional hatchback, rides like a conventional hatchback, but has the family focused versatility of a Swiss army knife. Prices for a used 2007 Ford S-Max range from £10,500 – £14,500.

You're missing the point of the Fabia vRS, especially the estate version. It's a particularly good choice if running a company car and limited to VAG motors. Renault/Peugeot aren't available, Seat are uninspiring, Audi are far too expensive and VW don't offer the same value for money - particularly when you get extra cash in your pocket if you don't use all your allowance. The small super/turbocharged engine also means it's reasonable on tax.

A car that can hold a mountain bike and a kayak, is a sensible drive most of the time and occasionally goes like stink? Makes sense to me.

I think it looks better than Seat's current gen offerings, definitely not as good as Audi and not quite as well styled as VW. However, you pay through the nose for the Audi and VW badges. 14 year old? Nope - now looking for a marginally more sensible car and putting the saving on paying off the mortgage.

Fascinating piece on Marchionne and Fiat. The targets sound crazy - but he's regarded as an almost Messianic figure for what he's already achieved so who knows?

About Islam in Europe. When I look at the massive unhindered immigration of muslims in The Netherlands, Belgium and France, I fear it is already too late. I hope not, but I am convinced that within 20 years a very cruel civil war will rage throughout Europe involving Turkey, Israel and other Middle Eastern countries as well. Maybe Europe will be the famous Armageddon : the site of the final battle between the forces of good and evil.

With regards to Islam, Neil I think you are being a little too optimistic. The Koran cannot be changed, and many will fight to the death to maintain it in its current state. I and afraid that the only course of action is the complete and utter destruction of the faith and it's removal from these shores and the secular west. You are correct about Worthing Mosque which just recently had a visit from an Imam at Langley Green and has been implicated in terrorism activities in the past.

I'd just like to make a comment with regards to fuel economy on my newly purchased VW Golf Mk6. It's an 09 plate with 8977 miles on it. I had to drive it from Crewe back to where I live which is only about 5 miles from where VW chose to Launch the new Polo (Hello Neil again, I'm one of the guys on the gate at the event who let you in!!) I'm deeply DEEPLY unimpressed with fuel economy on this car in REAL WORLD conditions, even though I did manage to get the fuel computer showing as high as 62.8 MPG on the 70-80 MPH journey on the way home. I managed to get this figure by resetting the trip computer while i was on the motorway, so dont think this is a realistic reflection of its true (UN)potential. I'm on my 2nd day with the car now, and I'm driving it Very gently, but in real world terms dont think I've seen 50 MPG out of it yet. We're ALL being conned by the major manufacturers and no-one seems to be doing a thing about it.Surely theres an argument that they are deliberately making false and misleading statements to big up their sales!!. Anyone have any useful comments about what I can do? Surely I cant return a car if I'm just unhappy with it's fuel consumption??? Anyone care to comment??? Neil, If you care to reply and help me out I would be most grateful.

Regarding the real world fuel economy of the Hyundai i20, I'm glad it isn't just me (or my car). I've got the 1.4 petrol and I see about 40 mpg too (in l/100km, about 6 following slow traffic on coutry roads, about 7 at my own speed on country roads, and about 8 at 80mph on the motorway). Pretty reasonable but not quite the claimed 50mpg combined.

I reckon you're right about the official figures being useless - although I have seen reviews where reviewers match the claims in their own tests. I'd much rather have consumption figures for a rolling road at 40mph in fourth, 80mph in 5th, etc. Which are easy to measure and well defined.

Hi - driving round some country lanes the other day on the other day, the
brakes on my wife's mercedes sports car failed. Instantly and utterly.

I was lucky not to be put through a wall at the time.

When I managed to get the car to the Mercedes Garage, I was
told that the part(a vacuum line) had been recalled. Recall No p129 apparenntly.

It would have been nice to receive the recall notice before my own funeral of course
but you can't have everything.

If my wife had been killed, I would not be writing this now because I would
probably be in gaol for murder, having put someone's head on a spike.

Anyway, any ideas what course of action I should take?
The car is 3 years old, get regularly serviced(by Mercedes) and I'm still
paying for it for the next 2 years by the way...

Yours,
Mike Knight
